Yougendy Mauricette is Athlete of Year
Three weeks after leaving no doubt he was the best in Delaware, Yougendy Mauricette proved he is the best in the nation.
The 6-foot-3 junior from Sussex Tech glided over the hurdles faster than anyone in the First State all spring. Then, at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals held June 16-19 at Philadelphia’s Franklin Field, he won the national title in the 400-meter hurdles in 51.31 seconds.
Mauricette won four events at the DIAA Division I meet on May 20-21, then swept the 110- and 300-meter hurdles at the Meet of Champions on May 25.
So it was no surprise when he was named Delaware’s Boys Track Athlete of the Year at the annual banquet on Monday. The junior leads the All-State team, which is comprised of event winners from the Meet of Champions.
Mauricette won Division I titles in both hurdles, the long jump and 200 meters. He had the best times and distances in both divisions in all four events at the DIAA meet at Dover High School.
