Everyone loved it when he called her “señorita,” but Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s romance ultimately didn’t last. The couple — whose relationship quickly made headlines in 2019 — called it quits for good after they briefly reunited earlier this year.

As 2023 comes to an end, Camila has seemingly been teasing new music (and some fans have speculated that she’ll address her and Shawn’s split in the lyrics). She’s been posting short teases on Instagram, and fans are excited to hear her new tunes, but some people are still wondering why Shawn and Camila broke up in the first place.

Why Did Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello Break Up?

According to E!, Shawn was the one who “initiated the conversation” to end their relationship in late 2021. As for Camila, she reportedly “agreed” with him despite being “very upset” over their split. At the time, the pair released their own statement via their respective Instagram Stories, insisting that their breakup was amicable.

“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” the former Fifth Harmony member and the “Stitches” artist explained. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.”

Both Shawn and Camila later opened up about their difficult split. Shawn explained in an Instagram video that he had to grapple with the aftermath of their breakup.

“Like, who do I call when I’m, like, in a panic attack? Who do I call when I’m like, f**king, on the edge?” Shawn pointed out. “I think that’s the reality that kind of hit me — it’s like, ‘Oh, I’m on my own now.’”

As for the “Bam Bam” songstress, she explained how she was handling their split during an interview with Zane Lowe from Apple Music.

“My priorities have fluctuated and my focus has changed throughout my life,” Camila said in 2022. “I think as I get older, yeah, the priorities shift. And I feel like that was that way for both of us. Because we both started so young too, we’re really learning how to be healthy adults. And that sometimes means not having your number one focus be your career. And that’s OK.”
