TCL announces 50 NxtPaper and 50 Pro NxtPaper smartphones
TCL just announced two new smartphones with its NextPaper display technology, which is aiming to reduce the strain on your eyes. The phones are called 50 NxtPaper and 50 Pro NxtPaper , and while they have more in common than the names might make you believe.
For starters they share the 6.8″ NxtPaper display with Full HD+ resolution and up to 120 Hz refresh rate. The NxtPaper panel is 2.5D curved on the sides, and since it does not allow for a fingerprint scanner underneath, the sensor is embedded in the power key.
There is a punch hole for the selfie camera, which has an 8 MP sensor on the 50 and a 32 MP sensor on the 50 Pro. There is no difference on the back, though – 108 MP main, 8 MP ultrawide and 2 MP macro cameras on both phones.
Another difference between the 50 and 50 Pro is the storage. The former has 256 GB, while the latter comes with 512 GB, and both have a micro SD slot.
The phones share 8 GB RAM and Dimensity 6300 chipsets by Mediatek with an octa-core CPU. They come with Android 14 and TCL promises two years of OS upgrades and support up until 2029 for units available in the European Union.
The NxtPaper technology makes the screen appear as paper with no reflections. This time, TCL implemented a physical button on the right-hand side, below the power key, that immediately switches between Normal, Color Paper and Max Ink modes. That last mode lets you read for up to 7 days or get up to 26 days of standby. It lets you select up to four apps to run in this mode and suspends all the rest to give you more piece and quiet during your readings.
The TCL phones both have a 5,010 mAh battery that supports up to 33W charging, but only the Pro ships with an adapter in the box. The situation is similar with available accessories – the 50 and 50 Pro can work with a designated flip case and T-Pen stylus, but only the Pro will have a so-called PC case.
TCL offers 50 NxtPaper 5G and 50 Pro NxtPaper 5G in Gray, Blue, White, Pink and Gold. The 50 will be available only in the EU for €229, while the 50 Pro will sell in the EU and LATAM regions for €299.
