The Green Bay Police Department and Green Bay Metro Fire Department were dispatched to a vehicular crash at approximately 2:45 pm CDT on Sunday, March 22. First responders said a tour bus carrying 54 people went over an embankment while exiting I-43 at Exit 187, Webster Avenue/East Shore Drive.

Passengers on the bus, which was traveling from Chicago to a casino in Michigan, were either transported to one of four local hospitals for medical treatment or taken to a reunification center established at The Salvation Army Kroc Community Center, 1315 Lime Kiln Road, Green Bay,” a release from the GBPD explained.

The news report detailed that 33 passengers were injured. Police officials said an investigation “will determine whether to refer charges against the bus driver.”

Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to call Green Bay Police at 920-448-3200. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 920-432-STOP.

Upper Peninsula Casino Bus

The Chicago to Michigan casino bus passes numerous places to gamble.

In the Windy City, where the bus departs, Bally’s continues to operate its temporary casino at the Medinah Temple. As the bus travels north along the nearly five-hour, 310-mile trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the voyage passes the Potawatomi Casino Hotel in Milwaukee and two Oneida Casino Hotel locations in Green Bay.

The casino bus was en route to the Island Resort & Casino in Harris, MI. The accident occurred a little over halfway to the tribal casino. The Island Resort& Casino is owned and operated by the Hannahville Indian Community.

The casino has over 1,100 slot machines, various table games, including poker, and a bingo hall. The Island Sportsbook remains closed after the tribe struck a deal with Hard Rock Bet in December to take over its online sports betting and iGaming operations. Hard Rock Bet is a subsidiary of Hard Rock International, a fully owned conglomerate of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Along with the casino, the Island Resort features 454 hotel rooms, an RV park, an indoor pool and waterslide, a full-service spa, eight restaurants, a 1,315-seat showroom, a 30,000-square-foot convention center, and an 18-hole golf course.

Casino Bus Accidents

Among the deadliest casino bus accidents in history occurred in March 2011 in the Bronx. The bus was returning to New York City from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut when the driver fell asleep. The bus hit a signpost, causing it to roll over. The accident killed 15 people.

More recently, a casino bus accident last August returning from Niagara Falls to New York City rolled over on I-90. The crash killed five people. The driver, Bin Shao, was charged with five counts of criminally negligent homicide and manslaughter. His case remains ongoing. Shao claims a water battle fell and lodged behind the brake pedal.
