OpenAI has introduced Prism, billed as “a free, AI-native workspace for scientists to write and collaborate on research”. It’s powered by the latest GPT-5.2 model. Prism allows for unlimited projects and collaborators on each project and is already available to anyone with a ChatGPT personal account. It will soon be offered to organizations using ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Education plans.
OpenAI says Prism aims to solve the common pain point of drafting papers, revising arguments, managing equations and citations, and coordinating with collaborators being fragmented across disconnected tools like editors, PDFs, LaTeX compilers, reference managers, and separate chat interfaces. All of this back and forth can make researchers lose context and have their focus interrupted.
Prism aims to fix all of that by being the centralized location where everything lives. It “brings drafting, revision, collaboration, and preparation for publication into a single, cloud-based, LaTeX-native workspace”, according to the official press release.
GPT-5.2 works within the project itself, having access to the structure of the paper, equations, references, and surrounding context. Prism is built on the foundation of Crixet, a cloud-based LaTeX platform that OpenAI acquired.
Prism lets researchers chat with GPT-5.2 Thinking, draft and revise papers with the full document as context, search for and incorporate relevant literature, create, refactor, and reason over equations, citations, and figures, turn whiteboard equations or diagrams directly into LaTeX, collaborate with co-authors, students, and advisors in real-time, make direct, in-place changes to the document, and use optional voice-based editing to make simple changes without interrupting writing or review.
